Sixto Mahecha-Diago

Veterinarian

Dr. Sixto Mahecha-Diago is excited to begin his veterinary career at Animal and Bird! Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Mahecha-Diago comes from a proud Colombian family and is fluent in both English and Spanish, allowing him to better connect with a diverse community of pet owners. He moved to Florida to enjoy some fun in the sun and is thrilled to serve the local area with kindness and enthusiasm.

His passion for animals began at a young age, growing up surrounded by a variety of pets. That early love led him to work as an Animal Care Associate at PetSmart during high school, sparking his desire to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

Dr. Six earned his Bachelor's degree in Biology from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he was an active member of the Honors Program, conducted research, and volunteered at a mixed animal clinic while working part-time as a veterinary technician.

He then attended St. George’s University for his veterinary degree, where he excelled both academically and in student leadership. He held executive roles in the Student Government, Latinx Association, Animal Welfare and Behavior Club, and Diagnostic Imaging Club. He also served as one of four class representatives, acting as a liaison between students and faculty. Among his proudest accomplishments was organizing a Gala to raise funds for the Grenada SPCA and the Grenada Kidney Foundation, as well as developing community-focused events supporting the Grenada Pantry. His dedication earned him multiple honors, including the Outstanding Veterinary Colleague Award and the Student Government Association Rising Star Award.

During his time in Grenada, Dr. Mahecha-Diago also participated in leatherback sea turtle conservation and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs—experiences that deepened his interest in wildlife medicine and public health.

He completed his clinical year at Kansas State University, where he sharpened his clinical and diagnostic skills. He also completed an externship at the Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center in Costa Rica, gaining valuable hands-on experience with a wide range of exotic and wild animals.

Dr. Mahecha-Diago graduated Magna Cum Laude and was inducted into the Phi Zeta Veterinary Honor Society in recognition of his academic excellence.

His professional interests include exotic and wildlife animal medicine, surgery, internal medicine, and diagnostic imaging.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Six enjoys relaxing at the beach, spending time with his cat Simba, and enjoying quality moments with friends and family. He is committed to treating every pet with the same care and compassion he would give his own and looks forward to welcoming clients with a warm smile.

Best, Sixto Mahecha-Diago, DVM
